Why did I pick to start this talk with a picture of a clock and Inter'l trade. What does a clock have to with it? Why would we care about it the time?
this is the first marine clock that work at sea. doesnt seem like much, why would you want to know if you're in this was made in the 1760's? why would you want to know what time it is if you're in the middle east ocean?
until this clock was invented, there was no way to position yourself on the earth, to know where you are, west or east latitude. You couldn't do east or west which made a very dangerous thing to go out to sea and not know where you are. its very risky business.
This clock revolutionized world trade because it was the first clock that could work under the condition of there's salt water, theres humidity, theres rocking back. this cock invented by John Harrison.
in a very real sense, trade is what makes us human right.
